Bridging the Gap Between Design and Business Value
One of the biggest challenges in design today isn’t capability. It’s perception.
Designers are often seen as executors rather than strategic partners, despite the value they’re capable of bringing to a business.
In an interview originally published in Brainz Magazine, I shared my perspective on why this gap exists and what needs to change for designers to have greater impact.
The Core Problem
There’s a persistent disconnect between design and business.
Many organizations still:
Involve design too late
Measure success purely on outputs
Underestimate the strategic value of design
At the same time, many designers:
Struggle to articulate their impact
Focus heavily on craft over context
Aren’t equipped to engage at a strategic level
This creates a cycle where design remains under-leveraged.
What Needs to Shift
Closing this gap requires change on both sides.
From a design perspective:
Thinking beyond execution
Understanding business goals and constraints
Communicating in terms stakeholders value
From a business perspective:
Involving design earlier in the process
Treating design as a strategic function
Recognizing its role in driving outcomes, not just outputs
The Role of Communication
One of the most overlooked skills in design is communication.
The ability to:
Frame decisions in business terms
Influence stakeholders
Build alignment across teams
This is often what separates designers who execute from those who lead.
Why This Matters
As organizations become more complex, the need for alignment between design and business only increases.
Designers who can bridge this gap:
Deliver more meaningful impact
Progress further in their careers
Help shape better products and services
My Perspective
This is the foundation of what I’m building with Wink.
Not just improving design craft, but helping designers:
Think more strategically
Communicate more effectively
Operate as true business partners
Because when design and business are aligned, the value becomes undeniable.
